"When accountability backfires"
(Main Body)
I bet you've probably heard that having an accountability partner can help you reach your digital marketing goals faster.
But, have you ever wondered if that's really true?
If you struggle to build a profitable online business...
Is accountability going to help you change that?
In order for accountability to help, you gotta apply it properly.
Because sometimes, accountability can actually backfire.
A lot of people think the best way to stay motivated is to find an "accountability partner" - someone to whom we have to report our efforts and results.
However, research has shown that trying to be accountable to someone else without a clear definition of what that looks like can actually demotivate us.
So if you're going to get external accountability, it's best to ask the person to keep you accountable for a particular aspect of the goal. For instance, the timeline or a certain target.
Read on, as I explain...
A University of Chicago study found that people who set a goal, but encountered negative feedback early on, were less likely to achieve their goal.
It's important to have positive feedback when you begin anything new.
However, did you know that even positive feedback can also have a negative effect on your progress?
Here's why.
An accountability partner who just praises you won't help you if you get off track.
You need someone who can point out *specific* ways you did well. You also need someone who can challenge you when necessary.
When you have a big win, it's okay to get praise.
However, avoid 'empty praise' like "You're awesome!" Instead, make sure your partner points out the specific actions you took. This helps reinforce those actions going forward. Plus, they can ask, "What can you do even better next time?"
I suggest you try this new accountability approach.
